His strong propensity for militancy aside, Malema has faith in democratic processes in South Africa. Commenting on the embarrassing debacle that was the Youth League conference, he said: “People try to exercise their democratic rights and in the process they make mistakes because they don’t know what this animal, democracy, looks like.”

We get the leaders we deserve. This is one of the inescapable truths of a democracy. Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela were chosen by the people, but so too were Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and George W Bush.

Julius Malema was elected — albeit by a slim margin at a conference characterised by nudity, drunkenness and violence — to lead the ANC Youth League.
